My style journeyI was born and raised on the South East Coast of Africa in Mauritius before moving to Canada in 2011. Since Mauritius is a multicultural island, I've always been influenced by the diversity of cultures, ranging from African, European, Indian, to Chinese. Apart from that, I also feel that my eye for fashion was passed on by my very stylish mother. You will usually find me rocking the preppy look with a tropical touch.
However, upon pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Mechatronic Systems Engineering, I felt pressured to adopt a more muted style. I was often criticized for what I wore: my style was too tropical or too formal for university, so I started to dress down and monochromatically to fit in. Fast forward to 2016, I started interning for Mercedes-Benz and wondered how to dress professionally. I wanted to make sure I was taken seriously as a young professional working amidst seasoned engineers. I inquired about the dress code but HR didn’t give me a clear answer. I figured engineers dressed very casually but professionally so the most appropriate “first day of work” outfit was a polo shirt, dark jeans, and casual leather sneakers. And it was definitely a relief that I didn’t make a fool of myself by wearing sweatpants or a full on suit. My diligence at work, combined with how I presented myself, really gained the respect of my supervisors and managers. But at this point of my style journey, I didn’t just want to fit in. I wanted to make sure my outfits truly expressed my identity. My style slowly returned to my Mauritian roots. Seeing my personal progress, many of my friends started coming to me for style advice when they’re dressing for weddings, parties, dates, and interviews. I’ve learned so much, not just about clothes but how transformative it is to express one’s authentic self through style. This is what I want to share with you. |

My initial style goal was to get rid of some old clothes that didn’t fit me or my current style anymore. I wanted to revamp my wardrobe by adding nicer and clean looking items. Once I met with Fabrice, he taught me how to combine the clothes I already had in my closet and some new ones to create cohesive outfits which match my style. Being someone who is not afraid to wear a bit of colour, I received advice on how to properly combine two colours together. Ever since, I’ve been complimented a lot on some of my outfits and even my footwear. I believe this was made possible by learning how to match colours that bring out each element in the outfit rather than looking blend and boring or bright and obnoxious. Beau Gent is definitely recommended and I will be back! Styling for an Engagement Photoshoot: Gerrit Van Esch It was nice to have a new set of eyes to look at my existing wardrobe from a slightly different angle. The pictures came out beautifully. Outfit consultation: Carlos Suzara Fabrice reminded me of how good it felt to go out wearing a stylish outfit since I’ve slacked on this in the last year. He brought to life pieces in my wardrobe that I’ve taken for granted and he taught me how to combine them with other pieces I had. He increased my knowledge on style with tips and tricks (like how to cuff my clothes, how to combine colors, and more!). Best of all, he brought me out of my comfort zone by teaching me how to wear a crisp white shirt casually! I’m very happy with beau gent’s service, I appreciate its value and I would definitely like to see him again. |
